Meet Michelle: The Heart Behind Our Programs

Michelle brings heart, humor, and a deep sense of purpose to her work at Project Host. As our COO, she helps shape the impact we make in the community every single day—and always with a thoughtful, grounded presence. From early morning coffee and quiet reading to dreaming of Greek island cafés, Michelle’s mix of creativity and calm inspires both staff and volunteers alike. We asked her a few fun questions to help you get to know the person behind the programs!

What’s your favorite part of working at Project Host?

I love that every day is different. I’d be remiss not to mention the people who work and volunteer here. There is so much talent, generosity, and humor in this building!

What’s a small daily ritual or habit that brings you joy?

I get up very early, pour a cup of coffee, and read for about 30 minutes in a quiet house.

If you could swap jobs with anyone at Project Host for a day, who would it be and why?

Cathy, our soup kitchen manager. She has to be hands on with the meal and interact closely with volunteers and our guests. It’s a busy job, with lots of quick decisions to make but it’s so rewarding.

What’s your dream travel destination—and what’s the first thing you’d do there?

The Greek islands, specifically Corfu or Naxos and the first thing I’d do is find a cafe with a view for a glass of white wine and some delicious food.

What’s something you believed as a kid that still makes you smile to remember?

I remember one summer when I was convinced that fairies lived in the woods behind our house. I loved to build little forts and houses for them.

What’s a quote, motto, or phrase that inspires you in your work or life?

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose” from Dolly Parton.  It’s a great reminder to just be yourself and trust in your own abilities.

You’re hosting a dinner party—what’s on the menu and who’s on the guest list (famous or not)?

Something simple but delicious like roasted chicken with vegetables or braised short ribs and polenta. I do love to grill in the summer, too. My guest list would be full of my family and friends- I'll need a bigger house!

What’s a recent moment at Project Host that made you feel proud or hopeful?

Culinary school graduations are always sweet and special. I love seeing the pride our students take in their accomplishments and the support from their loved ones. I’m also grateful for our garden right now, thanks to lots of hard work from our volunteers it is thriving and beautiful!

If you could instantly become an expert in anything, what would it be?

I’m not very artistically talented and am in awe of those who are so, maybe painting or sculpting.

What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this year, either at work or in life?

We have an annual beach vacation with my husband's side of the family every summer. It’s so fun and relaxing and I look forward to it every year!
