Volunteer of the Year 2026
Our soup kitchen is the heart of our organization. It’s where everything began, and it remains the foundation that all of our programs grow from. Every day, it brings our mission to life-nourishing those in need and creating a space of warmth and welcome. None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers.
Among them is Charles, our Volunteer of the Year. Since 2014, he has been a familiar and dependable presence in the soup kitchen, greeting each guest with kindness and a warm meal. His commitment and compassion have made a lasting impact on our community.
What made you want to start volunteering at Project Host?
I volunteered at another soup kitchen prior to joining the team here. I’ve always enjoyed volunteering, and I was lucky enough to find Project Host.
What does volunteering mean to you?
Charles in the soup kitchen!
It’s a chance to help other people. After 12 years here, I’ve become incredibly empathetic to the struggles individuals in our community face.
How has volunteering with us impacted your life?
I have said many times that this place is my second home, and I really mean that. I volunteer multiple times a week, so I try to get to know as many guests and volunteers as I can. I take pride in being a friendly face in the kitchen.
What’s your favorite memory from your time volunteering?
There’s no specific moment or memory that stands out, but it has always been such a welcoming environment between the kitchen and the entire Project Host family. And becoming a volunteer of the year was a nice surprise!
How do you see our programs impacting our community?
Prepping for lunch with fresh veggies from our garden!
Well, the garden grows a lot of food for our guests. The culinary kitchen has provided many jobs for their graduates. Even the small personal items that we give out (gloves, toothbrushes, etc.) make a huge difference.
How has working with Project Host shaped your perspective on food insecurity and homelessness?
Every day I feel grateful to have a roof over my head and all that I need to have a good life.
Have you learned any new skills through volunteering?
I learned how to cook on a large scale for a lot of people. And, of course, make it as delicious as possible with what we’re given.
What advice would you give a first-time volunteer at Project Host?
Enjoy the time you are here! Do the work assigned, have fun with the other volunteers, and take time to understand our mission. Everything we do is connected, so even one shift in the soup kitchen helps move all of our programs forward and makes a lasting impact.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Providing equality for everyone, including all the bare necessities of life. Everyone deserves a warm meal, water to drink, and a roof over their heads.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
All desserts. That’s it.
