March 2023: Volunteer Spotlight

Sandee and Charles, regular volunteers, joyfully preparing food for our guests.

Sandee Welch is a Wednesday regular here at Project Host. She started volunteering with us two years ago and has remained a loyal, weekly volunteer since. Sandee is always ready to lend a helping hand by greeting guests with a smile and a warm meal. Project Host was curious to know what drove her to volunteer with us and what keeps her coming back to serve!

Where are you originally from? How long have you lived in Greenville?

I'm originally from Southern California, but have lived in Texas, Kansas, Washington D.C, Utah, Northern California, Oregon, Scotland and France.  My amazing husband of 38 years was my high school sweetheart, and our incredibly wonderful daughter is currently a senior at Northeastern University in Boston. When in town, she volunteers with me at Project Host.  I also have two adorable dachshunds.

We moved to Greenville in December of 2020 and of all the places I've lived, it is my favorite.

How long/often do you volunteer at PH?

I volunteer at Project Host every Wednesday and have been doing so for almost two years.

How did you learn about Project Host and what drew you to volunteering in the Soup Kitchen?

When we moved to Greenville, I wanted to find a way to connect with and give back to the community. I've always enjoyed cooking and have also had an interest in addressing food insecurities within a city's varied neighborhoods.  While doing an online search for volunteer opportunities, I discovered Project Host, and I knew I'd found a way to fulfill my wish for meaningful involvement in Greenville.

What motivates you to spend your time at Project Host?  Favorite part?

A good meal not only provides sustenance but also comfort.  The fact that I'm able to give both to our guests who, due to varying circumstances don't always have access to either is part of what motivates me be a volunteer at Project Host.  I also really enjoy working with the other volunteers whether they are "regulars" or people/groups who are joining the crew for the first time.  I have met some wonderful folks and have made some great friends.

What’s your favorite memory you have related to Project Host?

It's always nice to hear one of the guests say that they enjoyed the food, particularly if it's something I played a major role in making!  There is one gentleman who likes to give tips on how something could have been better seasoned, and I really do appreciate his input! I look forward to coming into the kitchen, and seeing some of the regular guests who know that Wednesday is "my day" to be there.

How has volunteering at Project Host shaped/changed your view of Greenville?

Just like in any other city, there are those in Greenville who need assistance with something as basic as having access to a decent meal.  My experience with Project Host has enabled me to see that our community is full of caring and compassionate people who want to do their part in making sure that those in need have a safe place to come, sit for a while and have something substantial and delicious to eat.
