May 2023: Volunteer Spotlight

Ricky and Ginger, 2023

Ricky and Ginger are Monday regulars here at Project Host. They began about a year and half ago and have remained dedicated volunteers. These two love making a difference in their community and never hesitate to lend a helping hand in the kitchen. Project Host was curious to know what drove them to volunteer with us and what keeps them coming back to serve every week!

Tell me a little about yourselves. Where are you originally from? How long have you lived in Greenville?

Ginger has lived in Greer just about all her life. Ricky moved down to Greenville from Raleigh in 2005 and we met in 2006. They married in 2009.

How long/often do you volunteer at PH?

We have volunteered for about a year and half so far.  We volunteer every other Monday.

How did you learn about Project Host and what drew you to volunteering in the Soup Kitchen?

Ginger learned of Project host through an internship she did with Greenville Tech when she was studying for her degree in Human Services.  Also,  we lost our 17 year old son tragically in 2021 and volunteering at Project Host has really helped with our grieving process.

What motivates you to spend your time at Project Host?

We love serving the people of Greenville and making a difference in the community.  We really like our Monday crew and they are so fun to volunteer with!

What’s your favorite memory from volunteering at Project Host?

When the power was out and we had to make sandwiches in the dark and hand them out the door.

How has volunteering at Project Host shaped/changed your view of Greenville?

There are many people in Greenville that need help, but there are also a lot of people willing to give their time and energy to a meaningful cause.
